Academy Museum Pledges to Course-Correct ‘Hollywoodland’ Exhibit Amid Backlash

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has announced plans to revise its "Hollywoodland: Jewish Founders and the Making of a Movie Capital" exhibit after receiving significant criticism. Many in the Jewish community felt that the exhibit perpetuated antisemitic stereotypes. The exhibit, inspired by Neal Gabler’s work, aimed to highlight how Jewish immigrants shaped Hollywood, but terms like "oppressive" and "controlling" used to describe Jewish studio heads were found offensive. Award-winning director Alma Har’el resigned from the museum's inclusivity committee due to her shock over the portrayal. An open letter signed by over 300 industry members urged the museum to celebrate Jewish founders with the same respect shown to others. The museum will now collaborate with Jewish community experts and revise the exhibit.
