Homeless Man Who Brutalized Two Women at Venice Canals, Killing One, Sentenced to Life

Anthony Francisco Jones received a life sentence without parole for the brutal attacks on two women on April 6 in Venice Canals. Jones bludgeoned and raped Sarah Alden, a 53-year-old jewelry designer, causing severe injuries that led to her being taken off life support in late May. An hour later, he attacked Mary Klein, a nurse, leaving her with injuries requiring facial reconstruction surgery. The crimes, described as "heinous" by Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón, shocked the Venice community. Alden's death led to citywide outrage and a community rally. Law enforcement captured Jones five days later in San Diego, ending his brief period on the run.
