Ex-L.A. Law Enforcement and Former Military Officers Charged by Feds in Alleged Sham Raid

Two retired Los Angeles Sheriff's deputies, Steven Arthur Lankford and Glen Louis Cozart, along with former British and Australian military personnel, have been federally charged for orchestrating a sham raid in 2019. They threatened an Irvine businessman and his family with deportation unless he signed over $37 million in assets from a Chinese chemical company, federal prosecutors say. The operation was funded by a wealthy Chinese national embroiled in a business dispute with the victim. The group pretended to be immigration officials to intimidate the family. During the raid, they confiscated cell phones and denied legal representation. This scheme was to benefit from the proceeds, with a promise from the woman funding the raid that if successful, everyone involved could retire, according to an indictment. The defendants have pleaded not guilty and were released on bond.
