The drop comes in the wake of a tumultuous summer in which UCLA lost more than $584 million in federal research funding before a judge ordered the grants restored. While the timing of the rankings suggests the funding cuts may have played a role, UCLA’s fall marks a rare shake-up in a long-standing rivalry for academic supremacy in California.
