Judge Rules Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli Served Illegally, But He’ll Stay On as Top Deputy

A federal judge has ruled that Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, who has led several of Los Angeles’s most politically charged prosecutions, was unlawfully serving in the role after his interim appointment expired this summer. The Trump-appointed prosecutor, known for his hardline stance on immigration and ties to recent ICE raid cases, will be removed from his “acting” title but remain as first assistant U.S. attorney — effectively keeping him in charge of the nation’s largest judicial district. Essayli has since fired back at critics, including Senator Adam Schiff, while continuing to publicly identify himself as the “Acting U.S. Attorney.”

NBA’s “Scary Terry” Rozier Faces Federal Betting Charges With Trump’s Ex-Lawyer

Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier—better known to fans as “Scary Terry”—has been charged in a federal insider betting case dubbed Operation Nothing But Net. The veteran NBA player allegedly used non-public information to place fraudulent wagers and even faked injuries to profit from the scheme. In a surprising twist, Rozier is being represented by Jim Trusty, a former DOJ prosecutor who once served on Donald Trump’s legal team. Rozier has been released on bond and will face proceedings next month in New York.

Charges Announced Against 12 in Violent ICE Protest

Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, recently ruled by a federal judge to be “unlawfully serving” in his role, announced federal charges against a dozen people accused of violent acts during protests against ICE raids this summer. The defendants are alleged to have attacked law enforcement officers, destroyed police vehicles, and obstructed agents during operations across Los Angeles and Ventura County.

Santa Ana Winds Prompt Power Shutoffs as Fire Risk Rises Across Southern California

Southern California is experiencing its first Santa Ana wind event of the fall, bringing extreme heat, dry conditions, and gusts up to 45 mph that have prompted Red Flag Warnings across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. To reduce wildfire risk, Southern California Edison has cut power to thousands of customers, with more potential shutoffs looming. Officials urge residents to use caution with any potential ignition sources as cooler weather is expected later this week.

The Angel City Paradox: When Inclusion Meets Exclusion

Los Angeles’ most inclusive sports franchise finds itself at the center of a cultural storm after Angel City FC midfielder Elizabeth Eddy published an anti-trans op-ed in the New York Post. The piece, which called for “biological eligibility requirements” in women’s soccer, has ignited backlash among fans and raised uncomfortable questions about the limits of free speech within a team founded on equality, empowerment, and inclusion. Now, with Angel City’s leadership silent, the club faces a defining test of what inclusivity truly means.
