LA County Deputy Dies During Baker to Vegas Race

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy died after suffering a medical emergency while competing in the grueling Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay, an annual law enforcement race held in extreme desert conditions. Levi Vargas, a 30-year-old San Dimas deputy with more than a decade of service, collapsed during the event, which drew participants from agencies across the country. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes, with officials remembering him for his professionalism, dedication, and compassion as colleagues and loved ones mourn the sudden loss.

Cole’s French Dip Closes After 118 Years in Downtown LA

After more than a century in downtown Los Angeles, Cole’s French Dip has officially closed its doors, ending the run of one of the city’s most storied restaurants. The landmark, long credited with inventing the French dip sandwich, managed to stay open months beyond earlier closure plans thanks to community support, but rising rent and operating costs ultimately forced its shutdown. A final weekend farewell brought together chefs and loyal patrons to celebrate its legacy, while hints of a possible future chapter leave open the question of what comes next for the historic space.

The 6th Street Bridge has already made a name for itself as a filming hotspot and a target for vandals, but its latest chapter brings something new. Nike recently turned the space beneath the landmark into a temporary street soccer pitch, hosting a youth showcase that blended sport, música Mexicana, and local culture. With performances, community energy, and plans for a permanent field in the works, the event signals a new vision for how one of Los Angeles’ most recognizable structures could be used in the years ahead.

Three Futures for Southern California’s Historic Woolworth Buildings

Once anchors of American retail, F.W. Woolworth buildings across Southern California are now facing dramatically different paths. A fire has left San Bernardino’s location in limbo, Los Angeles’ former flagship is thriving as a retail hub, and a restored Bakersfield site has been reborn as a restaurant and entertainment venue. Together, they tell a story of loss, adaptation and renewal for some of the region’s most recognizable historic spaces.

Los Angeles Is Losing Residents. What It Means for the City’s Future

Los Angeles County has lost more than 300,000 residents since 2020, driven largely by rising housing costs, shifting job opportunities and the flexibility of remote work. Many are relocating to more affordable cities like Austin, Phoenix and Las Vegas, or moving inland within California, while still maintaining ties to the state’s economy. The shift is forcing a broader reckoning for Los Angeles, where affordability, industry changes and population decline are beginning to shape everything from local politics to long-term economic planning.
