The Getty Center will temporarily close beginning March 15, 2027 as it undergoes its first major modernization since opening in 1997, with plans to reopen in spring 2028. The upgrades aim to improve accessibility, sustainability and the overall visitor experience through redesigned galleries, a revamped tram system, new amenities and enhanced public spaces. While the Center is closed, the Getty Villa will remain open and a new programming space near the campus will host events and exhibitions, allowing the institution to stay connected with the Los Angeles community as the transformation unfolds.

Officials say the system must complete 30 consecutive days of reliable operation before moving forward, but with additional approvals and unresolved issues still ahead, the train is unlikely to open before the World Cup this summer.
