Mother Charged in Killing of Missing 9-Year-Old Melodee Buzzard
Authorities have charged Ashlee Buzzard with the murder of her 9-year-old daughter, Melodee Buzzard, after the child’s remains were recovered in rural Utah more than two months after she was reported missing from Lompoc. Investigators say forensic testing linked the remains to Buzzard and uncovered evidence of a calculated killing during a cross-country road trip. Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown called the crime cold-blooded and deeply disturbing, noting Melodee was last seen alive in October near the Utah-Colorado border.

Flash Flood Warnings Lifted After Soaking Storms, Sunshine Ahead for Los Angeles
Flash flood warnings across Los Angeles expired Friday morning after several days of heavy rain dropped multiple inches across the region, including more than three inches downtown and up to seven inches in Woodland Hills. While showers were expected to continue through the day, officials said rainfall should taper off by evening, with mostly sunny skies and mild temperatures forecast through the weekend and early next week. Flood advisories and watches remained in effect Friday, and Topanga Canyon Boulevard stayed closed amid ongoing concerns about mud and debris flows near recent burn areas.

The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a lopsided 119–96 loss to the Houston Rockets on Christmas Day, their third straight defeat, as the game unraveled early and never recovered. Guard Austin Reaves exited at halftime with left calf soreness and is scheduled for an MRI after recently returning from a prior strain. Houston controlled the game by dominating the boards and dictating the tempo, prompting a blunt postgame assessment from coach JJ Redick. The Lakers will look to regroup quickly as Reaves’ status remains uncertain.
Sean Diddy Combs Appeals 50-Month Prison Sentence as Unprecedented in Mann Act Case
Sean “Diddy” Combs has asked a federal appeals court to overturn his prostitution-related convictions or order his immediate release, arguing a trial judge imposed an unprecedented 50-month sentence by relying on allegations the jury unanimously rejected. In a newly filed appellate brief, Combs’ attorneys say the court improperly used acquitted conduct to enhance his punishment, despite jurors clearing him of racketeering and sex trafficking charges. The appeal also challenges the convictions themselves, arguing the conduct involved consenting adults and protected expression. Federal prosecutors have not yet responded, and the Second Circuit has not set a hearing date.
