Newsom Urges World Leaders at Davos to Confront Trump, Not Accommodate Him

California Gov. Gavin Newsom used a global stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos to warn world leaders against what he described as a growing tendency to quietly accommodate President Donald Trump. Calling on officials to stop “being complicit,” Newsom argued that avoiding confrontation may feel strategic in the short term but ultimately weakens democratic alliances and encourages further pressure. Framing the Western alliance as “dormant, not dead,” Newsom positioned himself as one of the most prominent Democratic voices willing to challenge Trump’s influence beyond U.S. borders.

Daughter of L.A. Mayoral Candidate Austin Beutner Dies at 22

Emily Beutner, the 22-year-old daughter of Los Angeles mayoral candidate Austin Beutner, died Jan. 6 in an LA hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. No cause of death has been released. In a statement, Beutner asked for privacy as his family mourns the loss of his daughter, a Loyola Marymount University student. Mayor Karen Bass and other city leaders expressed condolences as news of the death became public.

Timothy Busfield Released After Lengthy Detention Hearing in New Mexico

Actor Timothy Busfield was released on his own recognizance Tuesday after a New Mexico judge imposed strict conditions following hours of arguments over whether he should remain jailed while awaiting trial on felony child sex abuse charges. The court barred Busfield from contact with minors, weapons, and drugs or alcohol, but declined to order electronic monitoring or travel restrictions. Prosecutors urged continued detention, while defense attorneys argued Busfield does not pose a threat and challenged the credibility of the allegations.

Rick Caruso Ends Political Speculation, Says He Will Not Run for Office

After weeks of teasing a major political announcement, billionaire developer Rick Caruso has confirmed he will not seek public office. Caruso fueled speculation earlier this month by telling Los Angeles reporters he was preparing to announce a run, with many assuming a bid for mayor or governor. Instead, he revealed he is stepping away from electoral politics, citing disappointment while acknowledging the political math was not in his favor. Caruso says he will continue focusing his efforts on wildfire recovery through his nonprofit, Steadfast LA.

How a Fugitive Alleged Narco Kingpin Ordered a Witness Killing From the Shadows

Federal prosecutors say Ryan Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder turned alleged narco kingpin, ordered the assassination of a key witness while living under cartel protection in Mexico. As U.S. authorities dismantled his billion-dollar drug operation and flipped top lieutenants, Wedding allegedly used a global network of lawyers, fixers, influencers, and hired killers to silence a cooperating trafficker in Colombia. With a $15 million FBI bounty on his head and mounting arrests tied to the murder, investigators believe the manhunt for one of the world’s most wanted fugitives is tightening.
