Former Officer Gets Maximum Sentence for Brutal Baton Attack in West L.A.

A former Veterans Affairs officer, Juan Anthony Carrillo, was sentenced to one year in federal prison for a violent attack on a homeless man outside West Los Angeles Veterans Medical Center. Carrillo, a decorated Marine veteran, used a steel baton to strike the unarmed man 45 times in just 41 seconds, even though the man was already pinned to the ground. The assault resulted in severe injuries, including cuts and a broken foot bone. The ruling, delivered on November 15 by U.S. District Judge Wesley L. Hsu, emphasized the grave responsibility officers have in preserving public trust. Despite Carrillo's distinguished military background, his actions were deemed a severe breach of his duty to protect, leading to the maximum sentence for deprivation of rights under the color of law.
