SoCal Edison to Pay Record $82.5M for Bobcat Fire Destruction

Southern California Edison has agreed to an $82.5 million settlement—the largest ever in a wildfire cost recovery case—for its role in sparking the 2020 Bobcat Fire, which scorched nearly 100,000 acres of the Angeles National Forest. The blaze caused extensive environmental damage, including the destruction of critical wildlife habitats and the closure of over 100 miles of trails and campgrounds. Federal officials say the fire began when unmaintained trees came into contact with SCE power lines.

Traci Park Blasts LA Budget for “Boondoggle” Homeless Spending, Safety Cuts

Westside Councilwoman Traci Park delivered a scathing rebuke of L.A.’s $18.9 billion city budget, casting one of only three “no” votes over what she called bloated homeless spending and dangerous cuts to public safety. The plan reduces LAPD and LAFD staffing while continuing to fund the controversial Inside Safe housing program. The final vote comes as the city faces a $1 billion shortfall and fallout from a former deputy mayor’s bomb threat plea.

Senate Blocks California’s 2035 Gas Car Ban, Setting Stage for Legal Battle

In a 51–44 vote, the U.S. Senate blocked California’s landmark plan to ban the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035—undermining the state’s authority to enforce stricter emissions rules under the Clean Air Act. The decision sparked fierce backlash from California officials, with Governor Newsom vowing to challenge what he calls an “unconstitutional attack” in court. The move marks the first time Congress has overturned a vehicle emissions waiver granted by the EPA.

Speed Cameras Coming to L.A. in 2026 to Curb Reckless Driving

In an effort to reduce traffic fatalities and serious crashes, Los Angeles will begin installing speed enforcement cameras in 2026 under a new California law. The cameras will ticket drivers going more than 11 mph over the speed limit, with fines ranging from $50 to $500. Officials say the program could dramatically reduce injury crashes, but exact camera locations have yet to be announced.
