Landlords Who Price Gouge After Fires Face Monster Fines in L.A.
In response to predatory rent increases after wildfires, L.A. County officials are proposing substantial fines to deter such practices. Suggested penalties could see landlords fined up to $50,000 per infraction, significantly surpassing current state law limits. Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Kathryn Barger, representing affected fire zones, spearheaded the proposal after a case where rent spiked by $15,000 post-fire. Despite these measures, concerns about enforcement persist. Only two cases have faced charges out of nearly 3,000 suspected incidents. State Attorney General Rob Bonta and L.A. City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto are actively prosecuting cases, and rental pricing software is now under scrutiny for potential "automated price-fixing."
