Trump Threatens to Invoke Insurrection Act as Protests Escalate in Minneapolis
President Trump is again threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act, signaling possible military intervention in Minneapolis after two ICE agents shot civilians in separate incidents, intensifying protests and scrutiny of federal law enforcement. The rarely used 1807 law allows troops to be deployed on U.S. soil and was last invoked during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The threat comes as lawmakers push for reforms to limit presidential power under the act and as the Department of Homeland Security faces backlash over extremist imagery used in an official recruitment post.

Anthony Bourdain’s Publishing Partner Brings Anti-ICE Supper Club to Los Angeles
Roads & Kingdoms, the longtime publishing partner of the late Anthony Bourdain, is launching its Anti-ICE Supper Club in Los Angeles this month, pairing intimate dining experiences with direct support for immigrant and refugee communities. Running Jan. 31 through Feb. 3, the L.A. events will benefit Al Otro Lado and feature a 10-course tasting menu by chef Daniel Patterson, followed by a community-centered tlayuda celebration hosted by Guelaguetza’s Bricia Lopez. The series blends food, activism, and the belief Bourdain championed throughout his career: that respecting a culture’s food is inseparable from respecting its people.
Dorothy’s Ruby Slippers Return to the Academy Museum
After a brief hiatus, Dorothy’s iconic ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz are back on display at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Among the most famous pieces of movie memorabilia ever made, the shoes carry a storied history that includes multimillion-dollar auctions, years hidden inside MGM storage, and a trail of collectors. Now exhibited alongside costumes from Wicked, the slippers anchor the museum’s Stories of Cinema: Identity gallery, with a 4K screening of the 1939 classic scheduled for February.
Former Beverly Hills Pawn Shop Owner Sentenced in Stolen Warhol Scheme
A former Beverly Hills man who owned a Mid City pawn shop has been sentenced after pleading guilty to his role in a scheme involving a stolen Andy Warhol print depicting Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. Federal prosecutors say the artwork, valued at more than $175,000, was bought for a fraction of its worth and quietly funneled through an attempted sale involving a Dallas auction house before a West Hollywood gallery identified it as stolen and alerted the FBI. The case unraveled through cooperating defendants and expert intervention, ending with a plea deal that spared the pawn shop owner prison time.
Clayton Kershaw Isn’t Done Yet. He’s Joining Team USA for the World Baseball Classic
Dodgers fans will see Clayton Kershaw take the mound again after all. Despite retiring from MLB following the 2025 season, the three-time Cy Young winner announced he will pitch for Team USA in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Kershaw says he plans to serve as an “insurance policy” during the short tournament, stepping in when needed while avoiding a full comeback. The move adds another chapter to a storied career that ended with a second straight World Series title in Los Angeles and places Kershaw alongside a stacked Team USA pitching staff when play begins in March.
